Telcordia Technologies

Location: Morristown, NJ
                Navesink, NJ

Number of Respondents: 3

Telcordia Technologies has suburban locations in Morristown and Navesink, New Jersey. The student working at Morristown stayed at home, and those working in Navesnick were provided with dorm housing at Rutgers University for the first 10 weeks of the summer. During those 10 weeks, a van was provided for the 45 minute commute to work. However, the students were on their own to find housing and transportation after the first 10 weeks. After-work activities were limited, and one student wished that the dorms were closer to work.

The students worked in basic research, applied research, and product testing, in groups of about 15 people. While one student arranged his project before the summer, the others were assigned projects several weeks after arrival. The projects included setting up a Linux testbed for mobile IP and multicasting, computer simulation of a telephone switch, and research in graph theory. While two students felt challenged by their projects and thought that they played important roles in their groups, the third student was less happy with his project.

The students worked in shared offices, with the dress ranging from very casual to somewhat formal. Generally, the students were treated with respect and found their coworkers to be competent. The working environment was somewhat laid back, and the hours were of average flexibility. However, two of the students were frustrated with the availability of equipment; one noted that server crashes delayed his work. Two respondents rated the student interaction as excellent, with the company sponsoring dinners, a cruise, and a trip to an amusement park. One respondent was less content with the amount of interaction.

Telcordia does not provide health or dental insurance, but does cover moving costs as well as fifth year, first term tuition. Salary was below average.

Generally, the students had good impressions of the company, though one student was less satisfied with his group. One respondent would choose to work at Telcordia again through 6A, though none were sure that they would work there after graduation.

"Very challenging; well qualified; enjoyed the degree of freedom."
"I really like the hands on nature of the project."
