Welcome
Performance Development at MIT
HR has just launched a pilot project to improve performance development at MIT. The goal of the initiative is to help departments maintain best practices.

Welcome to the Performance Review and Development Site. This resource was designed to provide information about performance reviews and about on-going performance development.

Performance reviews, a shared responsibility for both managers and employees, are a key component of an employee’s performance development. While the Institute provides the structure for an annual review to discuss job/position performance, supervisors and employees are encouraged to meet throughout the year to discuss on-going work and performance.

MIT policy states that employees should have a performance review conversation at least once a year. The responsibility for meeting this policy lies with MIT's departments, labs and centers. Given the wide range of organizational structures across MIT's units, there can be considerable variation from one unit to another in how the performance review process is managed. This web site was developed to identify and share a range of best practices in performance management with the Institute community.

In addition to information about preparing for and conducting performance review conversations, this site also includes a variety of performance review forms. The site includes resources on feedback and on professional development. Each of the four sections of this site starts with an introductory "About ..." page. We encourage you to start your exploration of each section on the "About ..." page. As always, your Human Resources Officer is available to help with any concerns or questions you might have.

In addition to this web site, Human Resources also offers two courses on performance reviews. Performance Planning and Review: The Manager’s Role is intended to help supervisors learn how to plan for and structure performance conversations. Performance Planning and Review: Your Role in Your Own Review helps employees identify strategies for communicating effectively with their managers during performance review conversations. A special note to Lincoln Laboratory staff: Please also be sure to check with your Lincoln HR representative and the Lincoln HR web pages for any special circumstances that might apply.
