Prereq: 16.870
Level: H 3 units Standard A - F Grading

Computer-based tools that support the design and development of complex aerospace products are examined and implemented. The resulting simulations and models enhance the understanding of principles addressed in 16.870. Numerical Design Structure Matrix refinement improves process information flows and reduces design-development cycle time. Discrete Event Simulations evaluate system/product behavior prior to making hardware and software design allocation decisions. StereoLithography (Rapid Prototyping), an important means for dealing with product complexity, generates preliminary manufactured hardware parts based on computerized 3-D solids models.
A complete schedule will be handed out at the first meeting on January 10.

Prereq: 16.010, 16.020, or equivalent
Level: U 6 units Graded P/D/F

Introduction to computational tools and their use in solving engineering problems, analyzing data, and presenting scientific results. Techniques for the practical use of spreadsheets (XESS), mathematical and numerical analysis packages (MATLAB), symbolic algebra (MAPLE), and other Athena-based software packages are presented. Issues of computational accuracy and efficiency are discussed. Emphasizes problem solving using available software packages, not programming or algorithmic development. Enrollment may be limited.
