Introduction to Tabla, the Ancient Indian Drums
Chintan Vaishnav, Collin Joye
Enrollment limited: advance sign up required (see contact below)
Limited to 15 participants.
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: None.

A fun hands-on class for learning the tabla, the most common instrument in Indian classical music. Tabla has also found its way into western music, especially hip-hop and techno. The class introduces the student to the basic drumming technique, counting patterns, compositions and basic classical music structure. The focus will be on rhythmic patterns such as Tintaal (16-beat), Kaherva (8-beat), Rupak (7-beat) and Dadra (6-beat). At the end of the term, there will even be an opportunity to accompany a musician for simple composition. Tabla drums are not required and a few will be supplied to share. Anyone serious about continuing is encouraged to buy their own before the class starts (email instructors for details).
