Charles Darwin described the Venus Flytrap as "one of the most wonderful [plants] in the world" in his book Insectivorous Plants, but that's just one of the many species of plants that turn the tables on animals.  Come learn about the different adaptations plants have made to catch a bite in poor soils around the world, and a local growers society that's been described as "a lot more fun than those rose people".  Then, take home one of your very own (subject to demand). Come learn how to bind a book, and take your work home at the end! I will be teaching a variation on the Coptic style of bookbinding, which allows a book to be laid open on a table without straining the spine. Great for journals and sketchbooks. All you need to bring is an X-acto knife - all other materials provided. I'll have some snacks, but you may also want to bring a lunch.

Are you looking for ways to preserve your family history? Do you have questions about photo and document storage and preservation? If you answered yes, then this workshop is for you. Making a memory album of your heritage is a wonderfully creative way to tell your family story.

In this workshop you will learn creative and fun ways to preserve your family history for future generations to come. This easy step-by-step workshop will provide you with the information and supplies needed to create your heritage album or work on a heritage project in-progress. Please bring up to 8 photographs and memorabilia to be used in your album. All cropping, taping, and decorative supplies will be provided for your use. Pre-registration is required.

Creative Bookbinding: Flag Book

The flag book is an exciting structure that offers budding book artists myriad possibilities of content and design. It consists of a simple accordion-folded spine with pages called flags which may be decorated and arranged in unique ways to create a kinetic experience for the viewer. During the workshop, participants will create their own flag book model while exploring the basics of bookmaking. This will also be a special opportunity to work in the E. Martin and Ethel Wunsch Conservation Laboratory, and learn about the Libraries' efforts to preserve MIT's unique and varied collections. We will provide all materials, including a selection of decorative papers. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm!

If you’ve been meaning to get your photos into photo albums, but are too overwhelmed by your piles and boxes, this is the class for you. Bring all your pictures and memorabilia (greeting cards, certificates, ticket stubs, etc.) and $10 for a sorting box, and you will leave with your box full of organized photos ready to place into albums. We will discuss how to plan out your entire album and, if time allows, get started on mapping it out page by page so that you can finish your album in a snap.

How Bicycles Work and How to Keep Them Working

Intro to bicycle maintenance and mechanics. We'll address concepts such as where/how to purchase, frame sizing, and safety and discuss tuning, bearing overhaul, and wheel truing. We’ll answer “what's that squeaky noise” and “why shouldn't I buy a Wal-Mart bike?” Instructors have >25 yrs of experience manufacturing bikes and tools, owning a parts shop, and performing overhauls on their fleet.

Three 1-hr sections: come for one or all!
1: intro-topics such as bike types, buying/selling, safety
2: beginner maintenance-topics such as pre-ride checklist, turning brake/gears
3: advanced maintenance-topics such as hub, headset rebuilding

This class will cover basic sleight of hand sessions in card magic. You will learn various maneuvers, secret techniques, pattering, and overall cohesiveness of an effect. This is an excellent ice-breaker in awkward situations and can help boost self-confidence when approaching strangers. The benefits of public performance permeate the realm of magic into everyday life. We can explore other areas of magic, if there is enough interest.

Due to popular interest, the sessions will be cut to 40 min, and there will be 2 of them. One will begin at 5:00 to end at 5:40 and the second will begin at 5:50 and end at 6:30.
