IS AN INCREMENTAL CORE HOUSING STRATEGY THE WAY TO RE-ESTABLISH COMMUNITIES IN HAITI?
Thursday, 25 March 2010 from 12:30 - 13:30, in room W3-13
Hosted by the Global University Consortium Exploring Incremental Housing
Homebase: MIT-SIGUS
MIT Support Team: Xenia Antipova, Laura Delgado; Elaine Wong, Adam Galletly
A core house to be expanded through self-help offers a rapid, large-scale, low-cost intervention strategy which would parallel re-establishment of the city.
A brief overview of experience in Banda Aceh and Pakistan, and a core house incremental growth model would begin the discussions. Three issues would be debated:
- Does a core house self-help incremental process offer a viable approach for re-establishing communities in Haiti?
- What would be the characteristics of a small, simple core unit which links speed of construction, large-scale, and familiarity of material with family's needs? Or would a tent be a better start?
- How could an incremental process be implemented? Who takes the lead, how would a core be build and distributed? How to select families, how to find sites?
Discussions will be lead by MIT faculty of the Global University Consortium and representatives from development agencies and NGOs challenged with rebuilding.
