Surrounding the Sainte Chapelle on Ile de la Cité, the Conciergerie represents some of the darker moments in French history. Originally a royal residence, the Conciergerie was converted into a seat of government and then to a prison. The Conciergerie is perhaps most famously known as where Marie Antoinette and countless others spent their last days before being executed during the Revolution.
