After You Finish Writing

After you finish writing, you still have to: Polish the book. Make HTML. Make PDF. When you finish these tasks and your project leader has given you a t-shirt that you'd never dream of wearing in public, then and only then, may you go to sleep.

Polish The Book

When you've finished writing all the words for your book and the engineering team is technically satisfied with the book, now's the time to make your book look professional. This is important, so take a whole hour if you need to:

• Make sure there are no TBDs, "need to talk to Katie's," change bars, or the like still hanging out in your text.
• Spellcheck all chapters, appendixes, and index.
• Replace all final blank pages with the blank master page.
• Generate book.
• Fix widows and orphans in TOC and index.
• Copy your Frame sources to the doc repository:

• Create HTML files.
• Check your HTML files.
• Copy your HTML directory to the doc repository:

Make PDF

The PDF file typically goes on the same CD as the product. You need to:

• Create a PDF file.
• Check your PDF file.
• Copy your PDF file to the doc repository:

Make PostScript If Your Book is to be Printed

We do not currently create hard copies of our books. (We used to.) If we return to this practice, you'll need to create an appropriate PostScript file.
