Stephen Crain is Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Maryland at College Park. His research interests include acquisition of syntax and semantics, sentence processing, and neurolinguistics. He received his Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of California, Irvine Psychology: Program in Cognitive Science with an Emphasis in Linguistics. Recent publications include (with P. Pietroski ) “Innateness and Universal Grammar” and (with R. Thornton) “Acquisition of Syntax,” both in The Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science (Macmillan); and (with P. Pietroski) “Why Language Acquisition is a Snap,” The Linguistic Review.
