He is also a faculty member in the Harvard/MIT Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology Program, a Research Affiliate at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, and a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiology. He received his PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems in 1992 from Boston University, and his research interests include the neural bases of speech perception and production, neural network modeling of brain function, and functional neuroimaging. Some representative publications include “Speech sound acquisition, coarticulation, and rate effects in a neural network model of speech production,” in Psychological Review; (with Hampson, Michelle, and Johnson, Dave) “A theoretical investigation of reference frames for the planning of speech movements,” in Psychological Review; and (with Nieto Castanon, Alfonso, Ghosh, Satrajit S., and Tourville, Jason A.) “Representation of sound categories in auditory cortical maps,” in Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.
