Blue Cobalt Cichlid

(Maylandia callainos)

(also Pseudotropheus callainos; previously Pseudotropheus zebra)

Azul

Maylandia callainos

This male was sold to me as a Blue Cobalt Cichlid (Pseudotropheus zebra). However, after investigating further, I discovered that the "Blue Cobalt" now has its own species name: Maylandia callainos. Apparently there were just too many morphs of P. zebra, and scientists needed to separate them out again.

His name is Azul.

Here he is in the front of the two "red zebra" females (the red zebras are the two bright orange fish in back). Red zebras were also originally in Pseudotropheus zebra and were split off into a new species along with the cobalt blue. He is very interested in the red zebras (being most closely related to them), and sometimes tries to herd them around.

Here are more pictures of Azul. The one below is of him and his flowerpot cave. These guys love to stake out a cave of their own.

Here is a picture of Azul right after I got him. He's in front of a fake cubicle wall. We made cubicles for the fish, which they didn't like very much. (Smart fish).
