Masdar Institute
Professor John Perkins is the Provost of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. He took up this position on June 1, 2009.
The academic career of Professor Perkins spans periods at Cambridge University, the University of Sydney, Imperial College, and the University of Manchester. Before joining the Masdar Institute, he was Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and Director of the Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester. Prior to that, he was Principal of the Faculty of Engineering and Courtaulds Professor of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College, London.
Professor Perkins is the author of several authoritative reports and has managed industrial consortia projects aimed at benchmarking and introducing advanced control methods into industrial practice. His research interests cover a number of facets of process systems, including process design, process control and process modelling, and dynamic simulation.
Professor Perkins serves as Vice-President, the Royal Society of Arts, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the City and Guilds of London Institute, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Mathematician, and a Chartered Scientist and was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to science and engineering.
Dr. Tariq Ali is the Masdar Institute's Vice President for Rearch and Industry Relations. Dr. Ali comes to MIST after serving as Director, Imperial College Energy and Environment Office (EEO) and Head of Business Development, Energy and Environment. His career includes eleven years experience as a university scientist and subsequently, ten years as head of strategic partnerships and business development in energy and environment.
Dr. Ali has many professional memberships including: Fellow, Royal Astronomical Society; UK Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group; UK Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies; Institute of Physic Environment/Energy Group; IChemE Energy Conversion Technology Group; and BP-Imperial Organic Solar Cell Research Programme Advisory Board.
Dr. Lamya Nawaf Fawwaz is the Assistant Provost for Regional Affairs at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Dr. Fawwaz was appointed to Masdar Institute in May 2009.
Prior to taking up her position at Masdar Institute, Dr. Fawwaz was Director of Operations and Strategy at the Sharjah American International School (SAIS) at both the Sharjah and Dubai campuses. Dr. Fawwaz has been on the board of the SAIS for five years, providing executive supervision and developing the strategy plan for the institution. She is also a member of the GW Alumni Association, and a member of Alpha Iota Mu, the International Honor Society for Information Systems.
Dr. Fawwaz has a PhD in Higher Education Administration from George Washington University and a MsC in Information System Technology.
Mr. Hamza Kazim joined Masdar Institute of Science and Technology as the Director of Operations and Facilities in January 2008 and is currently Acting Vice President for Operations. His main role is to develop and maintain a comprehensive operations strategy and provide administrative advice and support to business units and line managers along with managing the facilities of the institute. In addition, he is liaising with the Property Development Unit at Masdar to ensure the timely handover of the new campus in Masdar City. Prior to joining Masdar Institute, Mr. Kazim was a Senior Business Performance Analyst at Dubai Aluminum “DUBAL” for four years.
Mr. Kazim earned a master's of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from Macquarie University, Australia and a bachelor's in Accounting from UAE University.
Professor Marwan Khraisheh is the Dean of Engineering for the Masdar Institute. Prior to joining the MIST faculty, he was the Secat - J. Morris Professor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky.
Professor Khraisheh is a recipient of a number of significant awards including the prestigious US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2004 Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, the 2003 North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI) Outstanding Paper Award and the 2005 Henry Mason Lutes Award for Excellence in Engineering Education. He serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Materials Processing Technology (Elsevier) and is a member of a number of international technical committees from ASME, ASM and TMS. Mr. Stephen Lee serves as Assistant
Provost for Academic Affairs for the Masdar Institute and oversees admission and
registrar activities as well as graduate student recruitment. Prior to joining the Masdar Institute, Mr. Lee was with the Malaysia University
of Science and Technology.
Mr. Orlando Lobo is the Financial Controller for the Masdar Institute. He is responsible for the Institute’s fiscal operations including budgeting, financial controls, reporting and acting as liaison with auditors and other internal and external stakeholders. He is currently setting up the Financial Services Department at the Masdar Institute and incorporating best practices in its policies and procedures. Mr. Lobo brings over 29 years of post-MBA work experience and over 17 years of post-CPA certification work experience to the Masdar Institute.
Dr. Haideh Nikpour is the Director of Library Services for the Masdar Institute. Prior to joining the Institute, she was at DeVry University in Northern California as the Director of Library Services, Northern California Campuses and was also in charge of the Information Literacy Program and Instruction. At Masdar, Dr. Nikpour provides leadership in developing and iimplementing a comprehensive strategy for establishing the university library and building the infrastructure required to support the mission of the Institute.
Ms. Zarmineh Rab is the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology’s Marketing and Communications Manager. Ms. Rab has recently joined the Institute after serving as the Department Manager for Corporate Communications at Masdar corporate headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Masdar, Ms. Rab was the Corporate Communications Director for Dubai Aerospace Enterprises (DAE). Her career spans other leading companies like Discovery Communications (Discovery Channel), the American Film Institute (AFI) and the World Bank Group.
Ms. Rab has Masters degrees from American University and Georgetown University in Washington DC.
Professor Youssef Shatilla is the Acting Associate Dean of Graduate Education/Accreditation. Prior to joining the MIST faculty, Dr. Shatilla's academic appointments included: Visiting Professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT, Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, and Assistant Professor, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Alexandria University.
