SpaceLand Camera Control Tutorial

Dragging to pan

To pan (move) the SpaceLand Aerial camera, press and hold the left mouse button. A red cone will appear, pinpointing the SpaceLand area under the mouse cursor:

While still pressing the left button, move the mouse. The camera will move such that the point initially selected will always remain under the mouse cursor:

Dragging to rotate

To rotate the SpaceLand Aerial camera, press and hold the right mouse button (or hold Shift and press the left mouse button). A red cone will appear, pinpointing the SpaceLand area under the mouse cursor:

While still pressing the mouse button, move the mouse. The selected point becomes our center of foucs; everything will rotate around this point, which will remain on the same position. To look at this point from a higher or lower location, move the mouse vertically. To rotate the world to the left or right, move the mouse horizontally:

Dragging to zoom

To zoom the SpaceLand Aerial camera, press and hold the middle mouse button (or hold Alt and press the left mouse button). Again, the red cone will appear, pinpointing the SpaceLand area under the mouse cursor:

While still pressing the mouse button, move the mouse up or down. The selected point is the center of focus and the view zooms in or out such that the focus keeps its position:

Rotating the mouse scrollwheel achieves a similar effect.

Control buttons

In addition, there are also new buttons that can be used to control the camera position:

The arrows show the direction of the movement (the diagonal arrows show an 'inward' or 'outward' z-axis). For example, to move the camera up, press (and hold as much as needed) the up button:

The diagonal arrows move the camera forward or backward, without changing its height:

The plus and minus buttons are used to zoom the view in and out:

The buttons feature acceleration, such that the longer a button is pressed, the faster the movement becomes.

Changing cameras

Notice the four buttons to the top right of the window. These buttons are used to select the current camera. There are three camera views: Aerial (user controlled), Agent Eye (1st person camera from the current agent), and Agent View (over the shoulder view of the current agent). The currently selected camera is shown as the more opaque button. To select another camera, just click the new camera button (on the left, the new button is slightly more opaque as we move the mouse over it; on the right, the new camera has been selected):

In addition, there are two possibilities for the current view: in the normal mode, the main camera shows as the main view and an overhead schematic of the world appears in the lower left corner. In the overhead mode, the main view shows the world from above, and the current camera view is shown in a smaller view in the lower left corner. To switch between the two modes, click the Overhead button to toggle its setting:

The view changes, and the current camera view is shown in the lower left corner. The current camera can still be switched while in overhead mode:
