Throughout the school year the Museum Education Deparment offers numerous hands-on workshops and drop-in activities for students and their families.

Children of all ages are welcome to attend the MIT Museum family events, but most activities are targeted for middle-schoolers and up.

This Spring, our programs for families include:

Wednesday, June 10
Apollo Celebration Displays
MIT Goes to the Moon (June 10 - Sept. 13)
Giant Leaps (June 10 - June 14)

Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14
Demonstration
Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing
1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
On July 20, 1969 MIT engineers helped land the first man on the moon.  Join scientists and engineers from MIT’s Aeronautics and Astronautics Department for a look into the current projects being developed for the future of air and space.

We also hold annual programs for families and young people throughout the year. Descriptions of these are listed below:

February Vacation Week
Every year during the MA school vacation week (just after Preseident's Day) the Museum celebrates National Engineering Month by organizing engineering specific workshops and demonstrations usually with MIT students leading the way. In 2009, our focus was on robotics; we offered daily tours and demonstrations, as well as a hands-on Lego Mindstorm NXT workshop.

Weekend Demonstration and Activities
Demonstrations and activities are offered in a number of areas of the MIT Museum on a rotating basis. Figure out how DNA works with our lego models, discover the XO "$100" Laptop, or learn more about geometry building hexagons based on the principals of Buckminster Fuller. Please check the MIT Museum calendar for future schedules.

Friday After Thanksgiving Chain Reaction
On the day after Thanksgiving, adults and children come together at MIT to witness the birth of an enormous chain reaction machine, in the style of Rube Goldberg. Participants link their homemade mini chain reactions together forming one mega chain reaction – set off at the end by host sculptor Arthur Ganson as the event's thrilling culmination.

Cambridge Science Festival
The Cambridge Science Festival is a 10-day celebration of science and technology with over 150+ events - including lectures, performances, exhibitions, etc. - throughout the city. The MIT Museum hosts many of these events, for a range of audiences, including families and young people. Please visit our CSF page for a more detailed list of this year's programs.
