Directions, Parking & Map

The MIT Museum is located near the north shore of the Charles River Basin in Cambridge, MA, a few blocks from the central part of the MIT campus.

 

The MIT Museum is accessible via public transportation, and is within three miles of two major interstate highways. The Museum is approximately a 30 minute walk from downtown Boston or from Harvard Square.

BY SUBWAY

Take the Red Line to either Central Square Station or Kendall Square/MIT Station—both are a 10 minute walk from the Museum.

From Central Square : Walk down Mass. Ave. toward Boston and the main MIT campus. The Museum is on the left at the corner of Front St.

From Kendall/MIT Station at the east end of campus walk down Main St., away from Boston, to Windsor St., turn left, take the second right onto Front St., and continue to the museum entrance.

BY BUS

The #1 or Dudley/Harvard Square bus travels along Massachusetts Ave. between Boston and Harvard Square. The MIT Museum is across the street from Novartis and a gas station.
From Harvard Square, get off at either Sidney St. or Albany St.
From Boston, get off at Front St.

BY CAR

For directions from your doorstep to MIT, Google offers excellent mapping services including directions from anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

From the North (I-95 or I-93)

Follow I-93 South into Boston, then follow the I-93 instructions below. If you are heading south on I-95, take the I-93 South exit, then follow the instructions from I-93. Alternatively, take the I-90 East exit from I-95, then follow the instructions from I-90.

From the South (I-95 or I-93)

Follow I-93 North (the Southeast Expressway) into Boston, then follow the I-93 instructions below. If you are heading north on I-95, take the I-93 North exit, then follow the instructions from I-93. Alternatively, take the I-90 East exit from I-95, then follow the instructions from I-90.

From the West (I-90/Mass Turnpike)

Follow I-90 east to the Cambridge/Brighton exit (exit 18). Following signs to Cambridge, cross the River Street Bridge, and continue straight about 1 mile to Central Square. Turn right onto Mass. Ave. and drive for about a half-mile. The Museum is on your left. If you cross railroad tracks, you have gone too far.

From Route I-93

From I-93, take exit 26, and follow the signs to Back Bay along Storrow Drive West, approximately 1.5 miles, to the exit for Route 2A. The exit is on the left, which leads to the Harvard Bridge , more accurately called the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge. As you cross the bridge, look for MIT with the Great Dome on the right. Continue on Massachusetts Ave., through main campus, for three blocks and the Museum is on the right.

To Compton and Hart Nautical Galleries

Follow directions to the MIT Museum, and walk to main campus entrance.

Parking for the MIT Museum and the Hart Nautical and Compton Galleries

Windsor Street Lot (map):
After 5 PM only. This is a gravel lot, across the street from the back of the Museum. It is an MIT employee lot till 5 p.m. on weekdays. There are a several clearly marked parking spots along the brick wall at one edge of the lot which should not be used.

Le Meridien (formerly Hotel@MIT) (map):
There is ample public parking in the hotel garage .

Street Parking:
There is metered (2 hr) parking along Windsor Street. Parking meters are not in effect after 6 p.m. or all day Sunday.
