The House Beautiful/AIA Climate Control Project
1949-1952
There are a few different types of articles by which House Beautiful relayed information on climate to its readership. These are:
The Pacesetter Houses were example homes House Beautiful had designed and built as exemplar of the ideas the magazine promoted. They often incorporated many of the series the magazine was featuring, and between 1949 and 1952 Climate Control and the 'American' Style were key features of these homes. The homes were completely designed from chair to rug overhang to tree. Some, but not all of the Pacesetter Homes were designed for specific climates. Most articles featuring the Pacesetter homes portrayed climatic issues in rather general terms. Part of this may have been due to the fact that many, if not all of the Pacesetter homes were built in the region surrounding New York City, most likely where House Beautiful's offices were, and the homes were open to the public to visit.
