Urban Ecology Links :: Website Typologies :: Academic + Educational Institutions

Please note: The site's name, project/organization location, and my comments about each website are located in the left-hand column. Clicking on each corresponding screenshot in the right-hand column will take you to the actual website in a new browser window so you can investigate the site, project or organization yourself.

THE ECOLOGICAL CITIES PROJECT
(University of Massachusetts, Amherst)
This site is an example of an ongoing research project that is being conducted at one specific academic institution. It takes a little digging through the site to find out precisely what sort of research is being done, but their growing database of urban watershed projects and their diagram about "the many components and interdisciplinary nature" of urban ecology are quite helpful.

WEST PHILADELPHIA LANDSCAPE PROJECT
(University of Pennsylvania/MIT)
This is an example of an academic institution affiliated with geographically-specific urban ecology projects. (Watershed and community gardens, in this case.) This website actually links users to two versions of the same information, as the project has been based at both Penn and MIT over the course of its existence. I actually found the older Penn website more helpful in illustrating the different physical projects that make up the overall research project; it also makes the origins and history of the entire endeavor clear whereas the MIT site never entirely addresses its affiliation with the project.

CENTER FOR URBAN AND REGIONAL POLICY
(Northeastern University)
This is an example of an educational site tied to a policy school. The emphasis is on regulations and research tied to Urban Policy as a whole. While there are several overlaps with Urban Ecology, one must dig deeper into the site to find specific information. The list of "Research Links" to various organizations, institutions and journals is a highlight. The site strikes a good balance between a regional and a national focus.

CENTER FOR BROWNFIELDS INITIATIVES
(University of New Orleans)
This site is an example of an academic institution taking on research and education about one particular topic within Urban Ecology. It has an excellent links page, and appeared second on Google search for "Brownfields." (There is also a link to this site in the Brownfields section of the American Planning Association's site.) The Center for Brownfields Initiatives has a very thorough map of brownfield sites throughout the country and it connects users to information on the Environmental Protection Agency's website.
