The current Lambda Project experiment makes use of an experimental technique developed by researchers at in the Nelson group at MIT. Early work showed that laser generated and detected acoustic waves could be used to determine elastic constants in thin films, as well as to detect delamination and perform film profiling . Later research improved this technique by introducing optical heterodyning .

Learning Guides

Various sets of materials have been developed to explain some of the basic physical principles that make this experiment work. These should be accessible at a high school level, and require no understanding of calculus. Some are papers, lesson units, powerpoint presentations or other forms of media.
