Active practice, feedback and improvement are important for helping a person learn something effectively: one does not learn to play the piano by watching many videos of virtuoso performances. However, most online courses today are very text- and video-heavy, and we believe this is because it is currently easier to record a lecture than to create interactive activities which provide students with useful feedback on their work.
Oppia is a new open-source tool, developed by a few engineers at Google as a 20% project, whose aim is to make it easy for non-technical people to create and edit lightweight interactive activities that are embeddable in any webpage. As more students play through an exploration, their responses are recorded, and based on these responses the community would be able to improve the exploration over time. In this talk, we will give a demonstration of Oppia, explain the philosophy behind it, and outline several future directions.
