Blowouts are depressions caused by the deflation of the wind; that is, the material is removed as the wind blows the finer particles away. These small basins form in soft, unconsolidated material such as sand accumulations or in poorly indurated material. In combination with some other weathering agent such as frost action or dissolution of a sedimentary bonding agent (such as calcite) deflation can produce sizable basins.
