Principal Practice Areas

Elizabeth Levy joined MIT’s Office of General Counsel as Counsel in May 2013. She brings a diversity of experience, including engineering, intellectual property law and business/transactional law, to the OGC.

Before joining MIT Ms. Levy was Senior IP Counsel for Bayer HealthCare Diagnostics and then Counsel for Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, where she was lead counsel for its Global Customer Relations and Global Key Accounts functions. Before that she was lead counsel for its Point of Care business.

She began her legal career as a patent agent while attending Suffolk University Law School at night, graduating with honors in 1993. She practiced intellectual property law for 8 years, joining McDermott Will & Emery as a partner in 1999.

Ms. Levy graduated with honors from the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and worked as an engineer in specialty chemicals, semiconductor manufacturing, and consumer products industries in the fields of quality control, quality assurance, manufacturing, testing and design. She holds two US patents in the field of incandescent lighting.

Ms. Levy was profiled in Power and Influence for Lawyers: How to Use It to Develop Business and Advance Your Career (S. Letterman White, West/Thomson Reuters 2011). She is active with her law school, serving as a panelist in its Legal Education and Practice Program and co-chairing its Corporate Counsel Institute, now in its second year. She is also active in the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), chairing its 2011 General Counsel Institute. She is a 2013 recipient of NAWL’s Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Member award. She is also a member of Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST) and co-leads a Cohort in WEST’s Leading for Impact program. She was profiled in Corporate Counsel magazine (Sept 2012) in an article on diversity and women in-house lawyers. She was honored as a 2013 “Leader in the Law” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly and In-House Legal.
