You Are Entering Hefty Applet Territory

Loading Speed

The applets in this repository are approx. 300k and are compressed jar files. There are two stages to be aware of: downloading to your machine and applet initialization. The downloading speed is dependent on your connection. For example, a high-speed link makes the downloading almost instantaneous whereas a 28.8k modem connection will take about a minute. The applet initialization is addressed in the appropriate section below. Once an applet is processed, the applet will execute at your machine speed and is not dependent on the network connection.

Explorer

You should be using a recent version of the browser (since July 1998). Applet initialization is quite quick and no problems have been reported with the applets when using Explorer. When the applet is ready, Explorer will display "Done" in the lower status area. Explorer is the preferred browser.

Netscape

You should be using a recent version of the browser (since July 1998). The applet initialization is slow (can be 30 to 45 seconds) and there are few indications that the browser is working on your behalf. During this process Netscape will display: "Applet OMACMain Loaded" and provide no feedback about the status. Since the applet is not yet running, there is no message we can display during the dead air time. When ready, Netscape will display: "Applet OMACMain Running". Netscape will successfully launch and execute any of the modules. However, Netscape cannot execute another javaOMAC applet after the first - you will get a message that the applet cannot start or cannot be init'd. To get around this problem, press CTRL-SHIFT RELOAD. This will cause Netscape to refresh its cache and allow the second applet to run. The alternative is to exit Netscape and restart.
