Essay contest for high school students on people and environment
Students from public and private high schools around New York State are invited to enter the 1st Annual Siena College Program for Sustainable Land Use Scholarship Essay Contest.
Changing Landscapes: People and the Environment is the topic for the inaugural contest, which is underwritten by Einhorn/Yaffee/Prescott Architecture and Engineering P.C., based in New York City and Albany, N.Y.
The deadline is March 28, 2003.
The Siena College Program for Sustainable Land Use encourages submissions that address how individuals and communities are using rural or urban land. The essay contest is meant to provoke thought about how we value the environment, both rural, suburban, and urban.
Essays may be in the form of research papers, case studies on a particular community's interaction with the environment, personal stories of witness to change, autobiographical poetic and creative pieces, or other written responses. Entries will be judged on the quality and relation to the theme, not the style chosen.
Papers addressing suburban sprawl, urban revitalization, agriculture, architecture, planning, transportation policy, land fills, toxic waste issues, or the "loss of community," are particularly encouraged.
Written pieces should be no more than 1500 words long. Entries should be submitted before March 28, 2003 by e-mail to mlindstrom@siena.edu or sent to:
