Carrying a registration load of less than full-time (36 units) may affect financial aid, loan deferments, compliance with immigration regulations, eligibility for varsity athletics, and external health insurance requirements.
Registration load does not include units for ROTC subjects or subjects taken as a Listener. However, the units for Listener and ROTC subjects are included in the calculation of tuition charges.
If undergraduates have been awarded financial aid and are registering for fewer than 36 units, they should consult the student financial aid staff in Student Financial Services, 11-320, about possible adjustments in financial aid. Students who receive MIT scholarship funds will have those funds reduced by the same amount as any reduction in tuition. Because a financial aid budget is based on registration load, the tuition amount included in a budget does not include charges for Listener and ROTC subjects.
For financial aid purposes, registration is measured once per term at "Census Date", which is the Wednesday after the semester's Add Date. Any change in enrollment during a semester after this date (other than a full withdrawal from all classes) will have no effect on a student's financial aid for the semester.
Taking less than a half-time registration load (18 units) will impact the repayment and grace period of outstanding loans and eligibility for new loans. Consult a loan counselor in Student Financial Services, 11-320, for more information.
International students are required by immigration regulations to be registered full-time when school is in session in order to maintain legal status in the US Students should check with the International Students Office if they have any questions.
To be eligible for varsity athletics, undergraduates must be registered full-time. Only seniors in their final term who have submitted a degree application are allowed to participate with a registration load less than full-time. For questions regarding varsity athletics eligibility contact DAPER Sports Administration, (617) 253-5006.
Undergraduates on a term of co-op or on approved Study Abroad/Domestic Study Away are considered to be full-time.
All regular graduate students are presumed to be full-time and are charged full tuition except for cases described in Graduate Polices and Procedures.
Regular graduate students who are not charged full tuition, non-resident graduate students, and special graduate students are considered less than half-time if taking fewer than 18 units (this unit calculation for registration load does not include units for Listener and ROTC subjects). Consult the student financial aid staff in Student Financial Services, 11-320, about the impact on loans and student expense budgets.
International students are required by immigration regulations to be registered full-time when school is in session. Students should check with the International Students Office if they have any questions.
