Effects of Bottom Fishing on Georges Bank

In order to gain a better understanding of how bottom fishing impacts benthic organisms, researchers from the URI Graduate School of Oceanography and the U.S. Geological Survey set out to survey the benthic megafaunal community of Georges Bank. This website details their studies and provides initial results indicating that these closed areas show several promising signs of recovery.

Protecting Water Resources with Higher-Density Development

The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the U.S. population will grow by 50 million people, or approximately 18 percent, between 2000 and 2020. Many communities are asking where and how they can accommodate this growth while maintaining and improving their water resources. While some communities believe low-density development will best protect water resources, some water-quality experts argue that this strategy can backfire and actually harm water resources.
