In 1959, Senior House, considered part of East Campus Dormitories, voted to secede and become an independent dorm.

As a result of Senior House's independence, new facilities were added to the building, including bike racks along Amherst Street and the gate house office shown here.

For several years in the 1960's, the MIT Shakespeare Ensemble used the second floor balcony of Runkle and the courtyard as their performance space.
