Message from Dean Fitzgerald
One of the most exciting things about being associated with SHASS—and one of the joys of serving as the dean of this school—is having a front row seat on the innovations and creative works of our acclaimed faculty.
This issue of soundings presents interviews with Alan Lightman, Sherry Turkle, and Junot Díaz—three SHASS-based authors whose recent books inspire, challenge, and move us. Each author has earned engaged audiences and critical acclaim; in fact, just as soundings went to press, we learned that Junot Díaz has received the 2007 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
The distinguished writers of SHASS help make this School an extraordinary place for deep thinking and discovery—and we couldn't be more proud of them.
