Guinness' Kids Page
Welcome to my Kids Page! Quick, before your parents catch you, go grab
some treats for me!
Ah, thanks, that hit the spot.
Here's how to say hello to a dog you've never met before:
-
Ask permission of the dog's owner. We can't speak English, so if it's a
grumpy dog, he can't tell you that.
-
If you're tall, squat down, so you're at the dog's level.
-
Curl your fingers up into your palm and make your hand look like a paw.
Then hold your hand out s l o w l y so the dog can smell your "paw". If
he licks your hand and wags his tail, you've got the green light to proceed.
-
Slowly turn your hand over so your fingers are facing up. Slowly uncurl
your fingers. Is he still wagging? Keep going.
-
Gently stroke the fur under the dog's jaw. Don't pat him on top of the
head - that's reserved for REALLY good friends.
That was easy, wasn't it? You should never pat a strange dog on the head.
Know why? Because some people hit dogs on the nose or head. This makes
the dog afraid of anything coming from above - including your hand. It's
safer to pet below the jaw, and the fur there is softer, anyway.
