Charles L. Cooney, Faculty Director, MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. Charles is a Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Dr. Cooney is Co-Director of the Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry at MIT. He earned both his master's degree and Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from MIT, and joined the faculty in 1970. Currently, his research group is pursuing the fundamentals of absorption and filtration in downstream processing, the use of genetic engineering to solve process problems, and the application of benchmarking to measure performance in pharmaceutical manufacturing. He has worked with several biotechnology companies in their early stages, such as Genzyme, Microbia, Bioprocessors and Dyax; as well as with larger pharmaceutical and chemical companies. He is a director at Genzyme, Cuno, and BioCon India.

Richard Kivel, Chairman and President : MIT Enterprise Forum, Inc. Richard is a serial entrepreneur and seasoned life science & technology executive with a proven record of building successful companies, world-class teams and securing profitable exits for investors. Rich presently serves as Chairman and CEO of Rhapsody Biologics, a biotech company focused in the field of vaccine development, with offices in the US and Singapore. Prior to this, Rich served as CEO of TheraGenetics, a UK-based genetic diagnostics company focusing on the development and commercialization of pharmacogenetic diagnostic tests to guide and improve the treatment of Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders. In January 2009, TheraGenetics was acquired by UK based Avacta Group plc. LSE: (AVCT). From 2001-2004, he served as CEO of MolecularWare, Inc., an MIT spin-out and leader in genomic and proteomic microarray technologies which was acquired by California based CalbaTech, Inc. Rich is a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and serves as Chairman of the global Board of Directors of the MIT Enterprise Forum and is a member of the MIT Alumni Association Board. Over the past decade, Rich has worked with many of the leading scientist and researchers at MIT and at other universities, focused on early-stage technology identification, development and commercialization. Rich is a sought after speaker and lecturer and has shared his insights on future trends in life sciences, personalized medicine and technology with audiences throughout the US, Europe, UK, Asia and South Africa. He has extensive knowledge and experience in entrepreneurship, IP, corporate finance, sales and organizational development.

Howard Califano, Director, SMART Innovation Centre. Howard leads and manages the overall operation of the Innovation Centre. He brings experience from the academic, industry and financial sectors focused on developing businesses around emerging technology. He has founded, held executive management positions, acted as Member of the Board of Directors and CEO of multiple companies in the United States and Asia. He was Consulting Director of Bio*One Capital Pte Ltd and acted as the interim CEO of several of their portfolio companies. Howard was the CEO of Johns Hopkins Singapore and The Johns Hopkins-NUH International Medical Centre. At Johns Hopkins Singapore, he led and managed a team of 80 researchers, physicians, administrators and staff, to establish a Center of Excellence in research, education and patient care. From 1995 to 1999, Howard was Assistant Dean of The Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, where he was responsible for its business development activities, including the Office of Technology Licensing which is tasked to commercialise all medical discoveries originating at Hopkins. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and a Juris Doctorate from University of Maryland.

Luis Perez-Breva, PhD, MIT School of Engineering, Lecturer, Research Scientist. Luis Perez-Breva is a Lecturer in Technological Innovation at MIT and Research scientist in the School of Engineering at MIT, and lectures on technological innovation with the MIT-Portugal Program. Luis teaches Innovation Teams (i-Teams) at MIT. The i-Teams program creates an educational experience for cross-disciplinary teams of students interested in the process to narrow the gap from research to impact. Student teams collaborate with lab directors to evaluate go-to- market strategies that help breakthrough discoveries achieve impact out of the lab. Through this program, Luis has guided numerous teams working on technologies from all departments at MIT through the process of narrowing the gap from research to impact. In 1999, Luis helped create Polaris Wireless, a software-based cell phone emergency location solution; in Polaris Luis played roles as main inventor, and in business development. Today, Polaris Wireless leads industry with accurate location for challenging indoor and dense urban environment. Luis holds a PhD degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in Business and Innovation. Additionally Luis holds a Business diploma from Institut Quimic de Sarrià (Barcelona), and Master Degrees in Physics from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris) and Chemical Engineering from Institut Químic de Sarrià (Barcelona).
