Coordinated Studies of the Solar Wind-Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Interaction:
Interball Observations
September 7-11, 1998
Faculty of Electrical Engineering
and Informatics
Technical University,
Kosice, Slovakia
Progress in magnetospheric and ionospheric physics
requires the coordinated study of multipoint and multi-instrument
measurements from spacecraft and ground stations. The
Interball-Tail and Interball-Auroral spacecraft have been providing
observations crucial to the success of the ISTP for
more than two years.
Now is a good time to:
review the progress made in interpreting these observations
establish new links with other researchers in the ISTP
identify tasks which can be addressed by joint studies
using the Interball data sets.
Special sessions will be
devoted to the analysis of solar wind input into the magnetosphere,
the structure and motion of magnetospheric boundaries, substorms,
the ring current, and observations of the auroral ionosphere.
With these goals in mind, we have decided to organize a
conference in Kosice, Slovakia, from September 7 to 11, 1998.
The conference will emphasize the presentation of new scientific
results via both contributed and invited talks, but will be organized
in such a manner as to allow sufficient time for discussion and workshop
activities. All participants in the ISTP are welcome.
Kosice can be reached from Newark, NJ and Prague, Czech Republic via
connecting flights on Continental/Czech Airlines. Kosice can be reached
from Moscow via direct flights and train service. The airplane
connection to Prague is twice daily. Visas are not required for US
Citizens on short trips. Summers in Kosice, a small city with a baroque
center, are warm and pleasant. There are numerous national parks
and castles within a short drive.
We are currently applying to NATO for assistence in covering
travel support and accommodation costs.
Researchers interested in receiving further details about the
meeting are invited to respond to one of the organizers listed
below.
The local organization will be arranged by the Faculty
of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Technical University;
by the Faculty of Science of P.J. Safarik's University and by the
Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
