Matthew Allen (German American Chamber of Commerce)
MAllen

Matthew Allen is the Director of Consulting Services at the German American Chamber of Commerce in New York. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Clemson University and studied the economics of renewable energy as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Augsburg in Augsburg, Germany. Since 2009 he has tracked market trends and moderated various events in the fields of energy and efficiency.



Keith Besserud (SOM)
Urban Information Modelling: Towards an Information-Centric Theory of Cities and Urban Sustainability
KBesserud

Keith Besserud, AIA, is the director of BlackBox, a research-oriented computational design resource within the Chicago office of Skidmore Owings and Merrill. With design partner, Ross Wimer, Keith set up the BlackBox studio in 2007 to lead the development and integration of advanced computational concepts within the multi-disciplinary design processes of the office. Keith received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign and his Master of Architecture degree from Georgia Tech. After 20 years of practice he returned to school at the Stevens Institute of Technology where he earned a Master of Engineering degree in the Product Architecture and Engineering program, a highly innovative, intensive, trans-disciplinary program focused on the intersection of design and technology.

Carlos Cerezo (MIT Sustainable Design Lab)

Carlos is a Spanish architect and sustainability/energy researcher. He is currently a candidate for the MDesS program at Harvard GSD, where he works as a Research Assistant in the Energy and Environment Lab as well as the co-director of the Green Design GSD student group. His research, working with Prof. Christoph Reinhart and Prof. Kiel Moe, is focused on Life Cycle Energy Analysis for buildings and the holistic energy understanding of the built environment, with special interests in the meeting points between environmental and historic conservation. He will be joining the Sustainable Design Lab in the Building Technology program at MIT Fall 2013 to pursue his PhD.

Timur Dogan (MIT Sustainable Design Lab)

TDogan

Timur is a PhD student and Presidential Fellow at MIT. He received a Diploma in Architecture from the TU Darmstadt and a Master in Design Studies from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Prior to his move to MIT, he was an assistant lecturer and researcher at the TU Darmstadt and the GSD. He worked for KSP Architekten, Wandel Hoefer Lorch Architekten and Transsolar. His current research interests include design, performance simulation and computer science.

Greg Havens (Sasaki Associates)
A Sustainable Solutions Framework for Planning and Urban Design
GHavens

Greg Havens is a Principal in the Campus Studio at Sasaki Associates Since joining the firm in 1991, he has focused on master planning, design, and programming for institutional clients throughout the United States and abroad. Greg's multidisciplinary interests enable him to bring a balanced and collaborative approach to planning and design. His interest in sustainability is a driving force in his practice. He actively works with clients to balance their mission with the environmental and financial aspects of sustainability. He is a member of Sasaki's Sustainability Committee and helped develop the Sustainable Systems Framework, which defines the values and key elements of the firm's project work. Greg is a registered architect and planner with over 25 years of experience. He holds a Masters of City Planning degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Alstan Jakubiec (MIT Sustainable Design Lab)

Alstan is a PhD student in the Building Technology program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His expertise is in daylighting and thermal modeling at individual building and citywide scales. Alstan heads technology development at Solemma, LLC, which produces the sustainable daylighting and thermal analysis software DIVA. He also developed the modeling and simulation methods behind the City of Cambridge’s solar potential map. Alstan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania respectively.

Kent Larson (MIT Changing Places Group)
KLarson

Kent Larson directs the Media Lab's Changing Places group. Since 1998, he has also directed the MIT House_n research consortium in the School of Architecture and Planning. His current research is focused on four related areas: responsive urban housing, new urban vehicles, ubiquitous technologies, and living lab experiments. Larson practiced architecture for 15 years in New York City, with work published in Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Global Architecture, The New York Times, A+U, and Architectural Digest. His book, Louis I. Kahn: Unbuilt Masterworks was selected as one of the Ten Best Books in Architecture, 2000 by The New York Times Review of Books. Related work was selected by Time magazine as a "Best Design of the Year" project.



Miho Mazereeuw (MIT Architecture)

Miho Mazereeuw is a landscape architect and architect, who has taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and the University of Toronto prior to joining the faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As an Arthur W. Wheelwright Fellow, she is completing her forthcoming book entitled Preemptive Design: Disaster and Urban Development along the Pacific Ring of Fire. As a co-director of OPSYS, Mazereeuw is collaborating on a number of projects with international non-profit organizations in the field of disaster reconstruction and prevention and is currently working in Haiti, Japan and Chile. Mazereeuw completed a Bachelor of Arts with High Honors in Sculpture and Environmental Science at Wesleyan University and her Master in Architecture and in Landscape Architecture with Distinction at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.



Cliff McMillan (Arup)
Sustainable Urban Design through Integrated Resource Management
CMcMillan

Cliff McMillan is a Principal in Arup’s New York office, where he is responsible for project leadership and management across a wide spectrum of major planning, infrastructure and building projects. With 47 years of wide-ranging experience with Arup, his leadership roles have included 7 years as chairman of Arup’s South African practice before he moved to the USA in 1999. Cliff’s major interest is in leading large and diverse projects, pulling together the best of Arup’s expertise to handle complex and demanding challenges. One of his responsibilities is integration of Arup’s skills in sustainability, transport planning, water, energy and waste as applied to planning and urban design challenges. Cliff has lectured and participated in post-graduate classes at various universities including Columbia and Pratt. He is also the author of numerous papers on engineering and professional topics.

Harvey Michaels (MIT Energy Efficiency Strategy Project)
HMichaels

Harvey Michaels teaches energy efficiency with focus on strategy innovation, and directs the MIT Energy Efficiency Strategy Project, which conducts business/policy studies of utility, community, and smart grid-enabled efficiency deployment models. Harvey also participates in the MIT Energy Initiative and the Campus Energy Task Force, and serves as an advisor to the Massachusetts utilities on community energy programs. From 1997 to 2007, Harvey led Nexus Energy Software (now Aclara Software) which builds utility efficiency and customer service Web sites, as well as Meter Data Management systems. Before founding Nexus, Harvey was president of XENERGY (now part of DNV/KEMA Consulting and Con Edison Solutions), which specialized in efficiency resource studies and analysis systems.



Matt Noblett (Behnisch Architekten)
Integrated Design Strategies for Urban Buildings and Places

Robert Matthew Noblett (Matt Noblett) is the Partner in Charge of the Behnisch Architekten, Boston office. Born in 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio, Matt received his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies in 1994 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Architecture in 1997 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. He has worked in a variety of architectural firms, including Rafael Viñoly Architects in New York, NY, where he served as project manager for large-scale and significant projects, in Boston and San Francisco. In 2006 he joined Behnisch Architekten, Boston, where he has been executive partner since 2009. Noblett has taught at Boston institutions of higher education and currently lectures extensively worldwide on sustainable architecture and design excellence.

Tarek Rakha (MIT Sustainable Design Lab)

Tarek is a designer currently conducting research in sustainable urbanism through a PhD in Building Technology in the Department of Architecture at MIT. He spent the last six years conducting cross-disciplinary research in cooperation with scholars in the fields of building science, energy efficiency, performance simulation, sustainability, generative design, computation and optimization. His current research work is in the field of sustainable urban transportation, and his focus is on developing simulation tools and metrics for architects and urban designers to assess the walkability and bikeability of neighborhoods and cities. Tarek holds a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. in Architecture from Cairo University. He is a licensed architect in Egypt and a Certified Passive House Consultant in the United States.

Christoph Reinhart (MIT Sustainable Design Lab)

Christoph Reinhart is an Associate Professor in Building Technology at MIT where heads the Sustainable Design Lab. He works in the field of sustainable building design and environmental modeling and has particular expertise is in daylighting, passive climatization techniques and the influence of occupant behavior on building energy use. Before joining MIT in early 2012 he led the Sustainable Design Program at Harvard and was a staff scientist at the National Research Council of Canada. He holds a doctorate in architecture form the Technical University of Karlsruhe.



Matthias Rudolph (Transsolar)
High Density - Challenges and Opportunities
MRudolph

Matthias, trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the University Stuttgart and Northwestern University Chicago, is project manager of Transsolar, a climate engineering firm with offices in Stuttgart, Munich, New York and Paris. He worked in the New York office as assistant director starting 2010 and returned to the Stuttgart office in 2011. Parallel to his professional work, in 2012 he accepted the chair of Building Technology at the Architecture Department of the State Academy of Arts and Design, Stuttgart.

Adèle Santos (Dean, MIT SA+P)

Adèle Naudé Santos, FAIA, is dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previously, as professor at the University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design, she taught the design of housing environments, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. She was founding dean at the University of California at San Diego School of Architecture, architecture chair at the University of Pennsylvania, and taught at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Rice University, and has had many visiting appointments. She is principal architect in the San Francisco-based firm, Santos Prescott and Associates. She received an AA Diploma from the Architectural Association in London, Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard, and Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania.



Andreas Wagner (KIT Karlsruhe)
From Buildings to Neighborhoods and Cities - Research on Energy Efficiency in Germany

Andreas Wagner, born 1959, studied mechanical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe before he worked as a researcher at the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg for 8 years. His main fields of research included solar thermal systems and energy concepts for buildings. Since 1995 he is a full professor for Building Physics and Technical Building Services at the Faculty of Architecture of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and head of the Building Science Group. His research focuses on monitoring and performance analysis of energy efficient buildings as well as comfort and occupant satisfaction at workplaces. From 2000 to 2004 he was Dean of the KIT Department of Architecture and since October 2012 he is holding this position again for 2 years. He is member of different editorial boards as well as of numerous committees. In addition, he is the co-founder of the consultancy firm ip5 in Karlsruhe.
