Journal - Week 1

After attending the first lecture, I am very excited about what this class has to offer. I was mostly impressed by how much information could be extracted from a single particular detail. This is what ultimately got me thinking about what type of site I want to choose. The example from class that resonated with me the most was the cluster of buildings in Florence that had been built where a theatre used to stand. When shown a picture of this site, one of the students suggested that the buildings within the wall may pertain to an older part of the city. This reminded me of my home city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. In San Juan, there is a great wall surrounding the old part of the city from the newer areas. In this case, the divide between old and new is very clear. However, I believe it will be much more interesting to find a site in Boston where the divide is much more subtle.

I have decided I want to choose a site that will allow me to focus on the contrast between the old and the new. One example from class that I found very useful for helping me choose a site was the picture of the apartment building with the brick wall that was built where a shop used to be. In this picture, the newer bricks clearly outlined where the shop windows used to stand. This example provided me with a lot of insight into what I should be looking for, and the attention to detail I will need to have in order to find the site that best suits my interests. I will start my search for a site by looking around the boundaries of colonial Boston.
