Journal - Week 2

I have been comparing maps of colonial and modern day Boston in order to choose an interesting site. As stated in my previous journal, my goal is to pick a site on the boundary of where the colonial city in order to really focus on the contrast between the older and newer parts of the city. Looking at a map of Boston from 1722, my eyes immediately jumped to an area labeled Mill Pond. In the colonial map I looked at, this body of water had already been drained. It is clear from a current map that the land has been filled in. This land lies just south of North Station, and is my prime target for a site. Just from looking at a map, I can see some very clear choices for the boundaries of this site. I have therefore decided that the target site is to be bounded by Merrimac Street, Causeway Street, Market Street and Canal Street. Tomorrow afternoon I will walk around and look for other puzzles in the area in case I need to readjust the boundaries I have currently chosen for this site.

If for some reason I am unhappy with this site, I have also considered another option that I can explore tomorrow if the need arises. This site lies on the eastern end of Newbury Street, bordering the park and the Emerald Necklace. My intent is for this site to be fairly linear and oriented from North to South (cutting through Newbury Street). Therefore, when I explore this site, I will limit myself to going as far north as Beacon Street and as far south as Boylston Street. Based on what I observe, I will choose my site boundaries accordingly.
