Introduction

This year's course and field trip incorporated newly developed field sampling technologies (ENVIT - Integrated Data Collection Systems) to study the Williams River in New South Wales, Australia. Along with Professor Garry Willgoose (Ph.D., 1989) of the University of Newcastle, the students spent four days determining chemical, biological, and hydrological water quality parameters in the river and then developed a watershed model. In addition to the field work, visits were made to New Zealand, and to Sydney and Cairnes in Australia. In New Zealand students studied the geology of the Waitomo Caves and the Rotorua volcanic regions. In Sydney, they investigated environmental chemistry and biology research in Australia with Professor David Waite (Ph.D., 1983), and fluid mechanics studies at the Water Resources Institute with Professor Ron Cox. Both professors are at the University of New South Wales. Finally, they traveled to Cairns to explores the Great Barrier Reef and the oldest rainforest in the world.
