SECTION : Falling Magnet

SUBJECT: Magnet Floating Above a Superconductor
see the experiment
DESCRIPTION:

This animation below shows howt a magnet suspended above a superconducting disk is supported by magnetic pressure. Eddy currents in the disk prevent the magnetic fields of the magnet from penetrating the disk. The magnet sits in a potential "cushion" above the disc, as the fields of the two currents systems (one the atomic currents in the magnet, the other the eddy currents in the disk) repel one another.
