Introduction to New Media Literacy
New technologies have broken down the line between media
producer and media consumer, calling into question the assumption
that children are passive victims of media. Professor Henry
Jenkins, director of MIT's Program in Comparative Media
Studies, offers his perspective on the role that educators
can play in helping prepare students for participation in
the changing media environment. He offers an overview of
how teens are currently using the Web as a means of building
community, asserting political perspectives, exploring their
identity, and displaying their creative expressions, and
he reviews some recent media literacy efforts that engage
students as media-makers in a broader exploration of the
social and cultural impact of the media.
The program takes place at the applicant's school.
