Tropical vs. Extra-Tropical Cyclones

12.818 - Introduction to Atmospheric Data and Synoptic Meteorology - Final Project

Tim Cronin

In this project we look at the structure of tropical and extra-tropical storms. These systems are called cyclones because the air around them circulates counterclockwise (in the northern hemisphere), the same way that the earth rotates. They are lower in pressure than the atmosphere around them, so differences in pressure try to force air in towards the center of the system. They are responsible for some of our nastiest weather.
