The gramophone is an important part of Victorian era parlors and is well known as one of the best analog music playing devices. I imagine retrofitting an older gramophone to serve our purposes rather than building one from scratch. Done well, it can help set the mood of the room.
Storyboard I has the gramophone handle falling out and primes the adventurers to place it back in. This handle could be spring loaded to help do that. Additionally, our clues suggest rotating the handle a certain amount, in either direction, in some sequence. Encoders can provide high accuracy degree measurement and can be used to see if the pattern entered is correct.
