The year has drawn to a close once again and we had a modest but nice dinner this year for Christmas. I gave Claude a copy of Jean Paul Marat's L'Ami du Peuple [The Friend of the People]. He adores Marat and believes that he is one of the greatest revolutionary printers of our time. Rosalie has been staying with us since the birth of Michel, she has no family in Versailles and we are always happy for another helping hand when it come to the children and the press. Danielle had a wonderful time this year trying to explain Christmas to four-month-old Michel. While the two of them napped after dinner, Rosalie, Claude and I sat around discussing the past year. Albeit very frightening, the main question was where is Paris going? Where are the people going? I feel very torn as a woman as a person for that matter in Paris. The revolution is coming down hard along with the guillotine. I have no idea of how many people died at the hands of that device and I don't think that I want to know. I worry about Claude, he seems to be getting quite cocky regarding this entire revolution. He acts like Robespierre's right hand man, as if no one can touch him. I think he's going to get himself in trouble, but he doesn't see it. He tells me that he is the voice of the people and there is nothing to fear. Perhaps the new year will bring something different.
