Karen
"Karen! Your date's here and so are Wendy and Paul!"

I got up off my bed and walked to the front door. I mean, you can't expect a girl to be sitting around waiting for her prom date. Nope, she's gotta be in the back mysteriously getting ready. Anyway, I'd only met my date, what, once before? Wendy set me up with Gordon, this guy who works with her.

See, having strep throat while your senior class starts selling prom bids is not a good thing. By the time I got back to school, most of my friends already had arranged to go with someone else. But I figured, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and started indiscriminantly asking guys to the prom. I didn't have any successes, but I was undaunted. If you ask enough people quickly enough and with little enough forethought, you really can't be disappointed.

So Wendy finally saw my plight and found Gordon for me. I think she felt she had to--we've gone to all of our formal dances together. When she was nine years old, we used to pretend we were princesses at the prom, and went running around the lawn with our imaginary dresses and tiaras. I remember when Wendy ran to her Dad asking if she could have a limo and a tiara and a pony when she went to her real prom, and her dad said, "Well, how about just a limo?" Turns out Wendy remembered that nine years later and became extremely petulant when her father didn't.

Anyway, so that was our plan. She had her date, Paul, and I had mine, Gordon, and we were off to our senior prom together in the limo her dad rented. And now it was time to go into the front room and greet them all and have my Mom take pictures of us all.
