We both went back inside and started looking for the girls. Off across the room I could she Karen and Wendy looking around. I caught Karen's eye and she waved at me. I nudged Gordon to get his attention, when I saw Wendy dash from Karen's side toward David's table. Gordon saw it too, and kept me from going after her.

We met with Karen and the two of them tried to keep me dancing instead of brooding. It was silly to watch them dance around--it was near the end of the dance so they were playing the goofy songs that everyone seems to tolerate--but it didn't take my mind off of Wendy and David.

Then the slow music started up, and Karen almost attacked Gordon. I couldn't find Wendy anywhere, but I wasn't about to break up the happy couple in front of me. They were entitled.

So I was wandering off the dancefloor, once more that evening. I could tell that this slow song would be the first one in the final string of slow dances, and I was just sort of hoping that Wendy would remember who her date was before the last song rolled around. I wasn't too optimistic, but there really wasn't anything to do for the last ten minutes of the prom. I sat back down and my table.

I was looking through the room to see who else was at their tables. There were only a few other people who weren't on the dancefloor, and most of them were just collecting their things to get out early.

I don't know what I was expecting, but I looked over at the table where David had been sitting. Surprise! He wasn't there. I guess David and Wendy must be out on the floor together.

But I also saw David's date, Amy, at the table, and she looked unhappy, too. What the hell, I'll see if she wants to dance. At least we'll have some common ground for conversation.
