SMA Beams to Three Continents

" Lecturers and students at the three sites see and hear each other as they ask questions, make comments, and otherwise interact across 12 time zones!"

The AMMNS programme offers two graduate courses live to classrooms on three continents — SMA 5107, Atomistic Computer Modeling of Materials, and SMA 5108, Materials and Processes for Microelectromechanical Devices.

Beginning this term, students at MIT, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Cambridge in the U.K. sit in new smart classrooms. Each classroom has large screens with video feeds of the lecturer and lecture materials. Lecturers and students at the three sites see and hear each other as they ask questions, make comments, and otherwise interact across 12 time zones! The classrooms were developed at MIT, initially through the support of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) and, more recently, the Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI).

MIT students take these courses as part of Course 3 in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), while Singapore-based students take them as part of the Advanced Materials for Micro- and Nano- Systems Programme of the Singapore-MIT Alliance, and students at the University of Cambridge receive credit in their Department of Engineering.

The SMA, CMI, and DMSE programmes involve not only collaboration in distance education but also in technology-mediated distance research. For more about the programmes that are broadening SMA's resources and impact, please visit their respective web sites:
