Seeking a tie for first with a win against
conference leader Clark, the Engineers quickly jumped out
to a 6-0 lead. Freshmen Adam Gibbons
and Mike Huhs converted easy backdoor
layups during that stretch. However, Clark battled back, eventually
taking the lead 11-8. The game went back and forth although
the Engineers managed to retake the lead as junior Neal
Brenner hit two 3-pointers giving MIT a 25-23 lead. Sophomore
Kyle Doherty added to the lead with
easy baskets in the paint and freshman Eli
Sheets's three-pointer before the buzzer gave the Engineers
a 41-31 lead heading into halftime.
Gibbons got the
Engineers started in the second half with a driving layup
plus a foul to give the Engineers a 13 point lead. Clark battled
back several times cutting the lead to as close as one, but
the Engineers' hot shooting continued as Sheets,
Brenner, and freshman Danny
Kanamori all connected from the outside to build the lead
back to eleven points with 8:30 left to play. Doherty
was also instrumental during that stretch as he was able to
get to the rim for easy layups. Clark then went on a little
spurt of its own, as they nailed consecutive three-pointers
to get back into the game. With the Engineers leading 81-78
with 1:30 to go, Clark forward Trevor Walker hit a three-pointer
to tie the game. The Engineers responded with a basket from
Huhs to put MIT up two points. Clark
then scored on its next possession to tie the game. After
an ensuing MIT turnover, Clark held for the last shot as guard
Sean Fleming hit a runner from the elbow as time expired to
win the game. Clark responded from cold shooting in the first
half (29%) to shoot 69% in the second half and hand the Engineers
its second loss in conference play.
