MIT started the game by getting out in the
break. Andrew Tsai and Adam
Gibbons scored buckets in transition to put MIT up early.
The Engineers made several runs in the half, leading by as
many as 14, with crisp ball movement and patience on offense
handling Eastern Nazarene's half court pressure. Good passing
and backdoor plays, many of which were finished by Kyle
Doherty who finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, kept
MIT ahead. Cold outside shooting (5-21 for 23.8% from the
3 point line in the game) and a few untimely turnovers, though,
kept the Engineers from pulling away. MIT took a 41-32 lead
into halftime.
The Engineers failed to widen the margin
very much in the beginning of the second half as the shooting
woes from the outside as well as from the free throw line
(12-24 for 50.0% in the game) continued. Eastern Nazarene
made a run of their own with about 5 minutes left to play
capitalizing on many of their 26 offensive rebounds in the
game. With under 5 minutes to play Eastern Nazarene took a
one point lead. MIT battled back as Mike
Huhs finished a reverse layup to regain the lead and a
big three by Danny Kanamori with
the shot clock winding down put the Engineers up by 4 with
under 2 minutes to play. Eastern Nazarene would not go away,
however, and when Adam Gibbons was
called with his fifth foul as well as a Technical foul, they
had a chance to tie the game up. But Eastern Nazarene could
not convert their free throws down the stretch and MIT did
to finish off the game and move to 7-0.
