In a big game between two rival schools,
MIT got off to a very rough start. Plagued by several early
turnovers and poor defense, the Engineers quickly trailed
18-3. However, following a lay-up by sophomore Kyle
Doherty and a three-pointer by freshman Adam
Gibbons, MIT seemed to regain its composure. Freshman
Danny Kanamori was instrumental
in breaking the Tufts' press and finding open teammates. After
some more hot shooting from Gibbons
and strong rebounding by freshman Mike
Huhs, MIT found themselves with their first lead off a
Kanamori steal that led to a transition lay-up by sophomore
Andrew Tsai. The game went back and
forth until halftime, where MIT clung to a slim 44-41 lead.
The hot shooting of both teams continued
early in the second half. Gibbons caught fire with several
three-pointers and mid-range jumpers as MIT jumped out to
its largest lead of the game at 58-50. Doherty
and Huhs also were able to give the
Engineers balance inside with more lay-ups and tough rebounding.
However, as Tufts switched to zone and eventually battled
back to take the lead, MIT went cold for a stretch, before
finally getting a three-pointer from Tsai
to tie the game. After both teams failed to score in the last
3:28 of the game, the game went into overtime with both teams
tied at 70.
Tufts got on the board quickly with a three-point
play and a lay-up and jumped out to the quick lead. With the
Engineers trailing by five, Tsai hit
a three-pointer to bring the Engineers back and Kanamori
tied the game at 77 with a jumper just inside the foul-line
with a little over two minutes remaining. After a few missed
one-an-ones by the Engineers, Tufts scored, and a turnover
by MIT allowed Tufts open an 81-77 lead. The lead was too
much to catch up as Tufts converted their foul shots down
the stretch.
