Tom and Reg enter after dinner. Reg is trying to tell Tom a knock-knock joke. Tom doesn't get it. They hear snoring and discover Norman unconcious on the floor. He seems to have passed out from drinking. Tom and Reg talk about Norman. Reg tells Tom that Norman had "a bit on the side," meaning a mistress, who broke a liason with him that weekend.

Anne enters the living room from the dining room. She rushes past Tom and Reg to look at Norman, who is still unconcious. Tom repeats what Reg told him about how Norman was drinking away his regret over being dumped by his "bit on the side". Anne is furious and starts kicking Norman. Tom is confused, so looks out the window. He notices that the cat is still up the tree in the garden, which launches him into a pointless, rambling anecdote. Norman starts snoring.

Sara enters with a tray of coffee. She insists that Tom and Reg move Norman to the window, which they do. Anne and Sara fight over who pours the coffee. Anne refuses to drink any when Sara pours it. Reg suggests they play the game he invented. Sara doesn't want to, so Anne says she'll play to irritate Sara. Anne makes Tom play as well, so Sara agrees to play rather than be left out.
