Fitness on a Budget
December 5, 2003

Beginning a fitness program or starting a new form of exercise doesn't have to be expensive. Here are some tips that will help you stay active and healthy while still on a budget!

BUY FOR LESS...
Buy athletic shoes for less than their retail price. Look for sales of 20% or more, shop at discount department stores like Marshall's, TJ Maxx or DSW Shoe Warehouse, or visit factory outlets like the New Balance or Saucony factory outlet stores that are located close to Boston.

New Balance Factory Store - 40 Life Street, Brighton, MA (877) 623-7867
Saucony Factory Outlet - 1036 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA (617) 547-4397

OTHER PEOPLE'S TRASH...
can truly be your treasure. Look for previously owned but lightly used fitness equipment. You can try an on-line used merchandise service like Ebay (be sure to check into shipping and handling costs because this could be a determining factor in your purchase). You can also email some friends and co-workers or post a flyer in a common area at work, asking if anyone has fitness equipment they are looking to sell. Lastly, a used sports equipment store like Play It Again Sports may have just what you're looking for, but for a lot less than you'd pay if it were new.

$$ BACK
Most HMOs, including the MIT Health Plan, offer you a substantial amount of money back after you've joined a gym or health club. Take advantage of these savings! To find out more about the MIT Medical fitness reward, visit http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-employee.html and scroll down to the "Healthy Extras" section.

SPEND WISELY
Before you purchase a piece of fitness equipment, athletic clothing or a gym membership, take a moment and be sure that you're being a wise consumer. Gather as much information as possible. Visiting Consumer Reports may be a good place to start. Many of their services are for a fee, but you can also get some useful information on their site at no cost. Ask friends, family and co-workers if they've been satisfied with their purchase of a certain piece of health equipment, athletic shoe, etc. Try on or turn on as many items as feasible. If you're going to spend money on something, you should be quite sure that you're getting your money's worth.

SHOP AROUND
It's that time of year -- the time when gyms and health clubs are going to offer "holiday" and "new year's" specials. If you've been thinking about joining a gym or health club, be sure to shop around and get the best deal. Money should not be the one deciding factor, but you may find a place that you feel comfortable, where the equipment is in good condition, AND where you can join for a reduced rate!
