MIT Ski Team

In the Spring of 2009, the MIT ski team was cut from the varsity roster due to

budget restrictions. Undeterred, the team rose from the ashes to form a club

team which continued in the varsity team’s footsteps starting during the 2010

ski season. We are now reaching out to MIT skiers to ask for your support in

maintaining a strong alpine ski team at MIT—a team that has been represented

at the regional competition for three of the past four years. In particular, there are

two ways that you can help:

* Financially, by donating to the club. The change in status to a club team

means that the amount of funding provided by MIT has been drastically reduced.

The responsibility for funding and supporting the team has shifted to the current

athletes and alumni donations. Although we have reduced our operating budget

by over 50% of our varsity budget, we still rely on athlete and alumni funding

for our major expenses ($3000 for lodging, $2500 for van rental, $3000 for race

registration and league dues). The team would like to raise $15,000 for this

season in order to cover team expenses, and to begin an endowment account

to ensure team financial stability for future seasons. The athletes are each

contributing $400 in addition to their own lift passes, and they would appreciate

your help in closing the budget gap for the season.

* Socially, by joining our MIT skiing network. We would like to strengthen

the MIT skiing community network by sharing results from our weekly races,

including photos, stories, and our progress toward Regionals. Additionally, the

team envisions encouraging ski trips around the world, and having an annual get-

together for alumni to watch a race and interact with current racers.

There are three things you can do to stay connected to the team:

and select Networks, Email Groups on the right hand navigation. A list of all

possible listserves appears along with a search tool. Search for "ski" and select

mit_mens_skiing. Anyone can join this that has an interest in MIT Skiing. We'll

send weekly race updates during the season and only a few messages when

there isn’t snow!

3. Consider coming to New Hampshire to watch a meet. We have races every

weekend in January at venues throughout NH and we love seeing alumni on the

hill cheering us on. Additionally, each year we host an alumni/parent weekend

at our cabin in Rumney, NH. More information on this event will be sent to the

alumni mailing list when the time approaches.
