In the U.S., an estimated 15 million tons of textiles are discarded or burned each year. But recycling textiles isn’t always easy. Now, Lincoln Laboratory researchers have woven reflective fibers into fabric to facilitate textile sorting and recycling.

Flavio Emilio Vila Skrzypek left his native country of Peru to pursue a master’s in city planning at MIT. He has made it his mission to improve land-use policy back home. “The state has accepted ‘slums’ as inevitable, but I want Peru to learn from these circumstances,” he says.

Elena Mendez-Escobar MBA ’15 is helping Boston Medical Center better serve its Black and Latino patients. “When you are at MIT, you can really pursue any passion in a low-risk way, and it can go much farther than you initially may have thought,” she says.
