The Human Factor
Introduction

The well-being of its crew is essential to the success of this mission. Because of the decision to man the mission, accomplishment of its chief goals is heavily dependent on the functionality of the crew. To this end, the systems listed at left have been proposed to maintain the health and safety of the six-person crew. These include both life support systems for the journey to and from Mars and a habitat that will be home to the astonauts during their stay on the Martian surface. A sizable effort will be required to sustain the crew mentally and physically for almost two and one-half years in unwelcoming surroundings, but the importance of this effort cannot be underestimated.
